sketch for project 1

  1. Nao, you're starting in a promising direction. The contrast between the seeming innocence and lightness of the young lady, Faith, and of Goodman Brown's torment generates much intrigue and tension. The composition is attractive too, but needs some minor refinement. For starters, since the bottom of the image isn't framed, I would avoid a horizontal crop at the top of the composition. Instead, the trees can continue in the space.

As for the rest of this metaphorical or conceptual illustration, embed far more meaning (content) in it. Goodman Brown poses like the character in Munch's Scream. Look at that painting and see how Munch depicted the background to support the emotion of his character. Consider bending, waving, or even cracking the (or just some) trees to reinforce that feeling. If Goodman Brown isn't wearing the traditional Puritan attire, why is he wearing nothing? Think about that. Could he have lost his clothing, could he have ripped it off (maybe as a rejection of his past)? Did it burn off his flesh? Etc.

Textures and patterns can further reinforce the metaphorical content of this illustration. What's in all the dark of the tree barks?

Remember this image is shape-based, more like a paper cut-out. Your sketch is gorgeous and well drawn, however it's based on line art and hatching. Consider a flatter approach, even though you can use effects to suggest tonal shifts (since you were using them through your hatching to suggest atmospheric depth).

One thought, but not necessarily a strong suggestion. You could perhaps design a few elements on the ground below and surrounding Faith's feet. This could enhance the image if you didn't simply use local or literal decorations (so grass or a dirt path won't do). For instance, what if you had flowers, which upon close examination looked like other things (skulls, flames, snake tongues, etc.)?

So this is looking promising, but it's still half-narrative, half-conceptual, and we're looking to push this a few degrees more in the conceptual realm. Go for it!
